The finest materials selected from raw hides
Selecting raw hides is a complex process, as their properties change depending on the temperature differences between spring, summer, autumn and winter, and humidity differences during the rainy season and dry winter.
Not only that, but the way the animals are raised and the way the hides are processed varies depending on the region, so it is necessary to carefully consider these. Among these, we carefully select the raw hides that are of satisfactory quality, specifying the place of origin, etc.
We select only high-quality leather, but each piece of raw hide has a different appearance.
Raw leather is a natural product and, just like human skin, no two pieces are exactly the same. In the same way, there will always be scars and blemishes, but no two are the same. We hope you will enjoy the scars and blemishes, which are proof that the leather has lived in nature, as part of its texture.
The best tanning, carefully considered for each leather and item
Generally speaking, there are various tanning methods, such as tannin tanning, chrome tanning, oil tanning, and salt tanning. Wet blue, a fabric color representative of chrome tanning In Japan, there is a stereotype that tannin-tanned leather is good and chrome-tanned leather is cheap.
In reality, there is no right or wrong way to tan, but rather the nature of the leather changes depending on the tanning method, so the tanning method you choose depends on the final finish you want to achieve with the leather. In some cases, multiple tanning methods may be used together.
Rather than using just one type of vegetable tannin, multiple types are mixed together and the composition is changed depending on the desired texture.
And even within techniques such as tannin tanning and chrome tanning, each tanner has their own secret recipes, with different concentrations, types, blends and methods of chemicals used, and each has their own specialty finishing method.
With these things in mind, the BONCOURA Leather Project was launched. At first, the feel, texture, and color were not what we wanted. When we tried to touch it, the weight was a problem, when we worried about color transfer, the texture was a problem, when we tried to fix the color, unevenness arose, and so on. Every time we overcame one challenge, a new one arose, and before we knew it, we were using dozens of pieces of raw hides in a process of trial and error.
With the help of experienced craftsmen, and after much trial and error, we were able to create a product with the texture that perfectly matched our imagination of suede.
The texture of the suede we developed is soft, elegant, and smooth, and it has been specially tanned to make it resistant to color transfer and water. We have created an ideal product that allows you to enjoy the original texture of the leather without applying any cosmetic pigments to the surface.
Sewing
Each piece is carefully hand-cut by a craftsman Each piece of leather is carefully cut by hand.
This process is aimed at checking the condition of each piece of leather one by one to avoid scratches, but another important purpose is to determine the texture of the fabric, the length of the pile on the suede surface varies depending on the part, with the pile on the belly side being longer and the pile on the back being shorter. The individuality of which parts of the leather will have longer pile and which parts will have shorter pile is decided within the limited size of a single piece of leather, so the craftsman's sense in reading the condition of the leather shines through.
Old-fashioned workwear was packed with wisdom that cannot be summed up simply as work clothes.
It was a time when people traveled by horseback across wide areas, exposing themselves to temperature changes and dust, and kept moving all day long.
Clothes created for such everyday life required quick putting on, ease of movement, and a reliable construction.
The front closure allows for quick one-handed removal. Tailored to allow freedom of movement for the shoulders and back.
The angle of the pockets allows you to insert your hand naturally, and there is a small pen holder on the chest.
None of them stand out, but they're there because they're necessary.
We were attracted by the functional beauty of this jacket and reconstructed it with the essence of BONCOURA.
