Half-zip pullover work shirts began to appear in the early 1930s.

During this period, zippers started to replace buttons on the short front plackets traditionally used on pullover shirts. While the pullover style remained in use, fully buttoned work shirts were becoming increasingly common, making the half-zip design a form characteristic of this transitional era.

The chest-length zipper retains the simple construction of a pullover while making the shirt easier to put on and take off. Closing the zipper fully creates a more defined neckline, while leaving it open provides additional room around the neck and allows the inner layer to show, changing the appearance depending on how it is worn.
